Our Legacy

In Loving Memory
William Darpino
William Darpino was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, ordained minister, and lifelong lover of both God's people and God's creation. His faith was the foundation of his life, shaping the way he loved, served, and cared for those around him.
Professionally, William built his career as a landscaper, working diligently to provide for his family while maintaining a deep appreciation for the land. Yet beyond his profession, he carried a lifelong love for farm life. As a boy and teenager, he spent cherished time on his grandfather's farm, where he developed a deep respect for animals and the responsibility of caring for them.
William was an ordained pastor who faithfully served in ministry throughout his life. Though he never pursued full-time pastoral work, he remained actively involved in church leadership and ministry, offering guidance, prayer, and support to many. His commitment to relationships — both spiritual and personal — defined him. He believed deeply in caring for people, walking alongside them in difficult seasons, and reflecting God's love in practical ways.
That same compassion extended to animals. He found peace and purpose in tending to them and believed that stewardship of God's creation was an act of faithfulness.
When family members faced hardship, William stepped in without hesitation — providing not only emotional support but also a safe home for animals in need. His quiet strength, generosity, and unwavering faith left a lasting imprint on his family.
Following his passing from pancreatic cancer, his family chose to honor his legacy by transforming the family farm into Sunshine Farm Sanctuary. Today, the sanctuary stands as a living tribute to his faith, his devotion to family, and his belief in compassionate care for both people and animals.
Our Team

Joan Everitt
President
Joan's story is deeply rooted in her father William's legacy. When he passed away, she and her sister-in-law Emily transformed their family farm into a sanctuary to honor his love for farm life and animals. Joan works to extend the same compassion her father showed her. A wife, mother, and grandmother, Joan believes relationships are life's greatest gift. She finds peace in the quiet companionship of the animals and watches with joy as her grandchildren learn stewardship and kindness.

Leila Frick
Vice President
When Leila learned that her grandmother needed help keeping the sanctuary alive, she knew what she had to do. With her husband AJ's full support, they purchased land with 8 acres — exactly what they needed to continue her grandfather William's legacy. Leila's heart for animal rescue is evident in everything she does: ensuring each resident has a safe, permanent home where they never have to experience trauma again. She finds deep joy in helping both animals and people, giving peace of mind to those who can no longer care for their own animals. Through countless projects with AJ and cherished memories built while improving shelters and caring for residents, Leila demonstrates daily that compassion and commitment transform lives. When she's not at the sanctuary, you'll find her crocheting — a hobby that brings her as much joy as caring for the animals.

Abigail Rodriguez
Secretary/Treasurer
Abigail believes in the power of family and community. Asked by Joan to help when the sanctuary was relocating to Pennsylvania, Abigail has been an integral part of the team ever since. She cherishes the opportunity to spend time with family while caring for the animals — especially Dominic, one of the first residents she helped welcome. With her steady presence and caring heart, Abigail helps keep Sunshine Farm Sanctuary running smoothly.

AJ Frick
Board Member
When AJ and his wife Leila purchased land with nearly 8 acres, they saw an opportunity to honor Leila's grandfather William's legacy by continuing his sanctuary work. AJ brings practical skills and vision to the team — building and maintaining the sanctuary's infrastructure while supporting Leila's passionate vision of caring for the animals. Whether designing the sanctuary's digital presence or making improvements, AJ works behind the scenes to give these animals a thriving home.
